week 1 - June 7th

This week we go through the basics of Discovery Bible study, introduced the workbook and tools we will use and then covered the first lesson from our workbook on Minor Prophets.

week 2 - June 14th

This week we worked though questions on the book of Obadiah. We discovered some principles that apply to us today, talked about how to make sure we apply these principles, and the importance of asking questions of the scriptures as we read them so we can understand better what they are saying.

week 3 - june 21st

We looked at the first two chapters of Joel to understand what God was saying through Joel to the people of Israel as well as how Joel pointed to the coming of Christ and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

week 4 - june 28th

In the book of Jonah we looked at the history around this time period to understand more about the mercy and love of God for all people everywhere. We saw the parallel to the Gospel story and how Jesus talked about it and how it relates to his coming. We also talked about how we are sometimes like Jonah in wanting our way over God's way and how instead we need to be a conduit of God's love and mercy to others.

week 5 - july 5th

The book of Amos is one of the longer books of the Minor Prophets. We went through an overview of the themes but also got down to some of the details. God can use any of us, even a farmer like Amos, to bring the messages of God to others. Comfort and the search for more can lead us away from God, but we can find a closeness to God by seeking Him.

week 6 - July 12th

We look at the book of Hosea and how God used his life as an illustration of how the people had gone after other lovers. In the midst of the condemnation for this sin, God kept offering hope and calling them to repentance. This can spark great discussion on how we also have times of rebellion and how God is always calling us back to his love.

week 7 - July 19th

In the book of Micah and saw how the leaders and prophets were not following God but really serving themselves. Even though God would send them into exile, He would one day restore a remnant and ultimately through the Messiah would being salvation to all nations.

week 8 - JULY 26th

Zephaniah wrote 100 years after our Micah and we see that even though both wrote under a good king, that the people have not changed much and the judgement of God was as hand. In our discussion we talk about how our world is similar and that even with the virus, riots, and general rebellion against God, we can trust God to be with us and to make good out of the bad in his time.

week 9 - August 2nd

Nahum gives the last prophecy about Nineveh and the destruction of the Assyrian empire. This was 150 years after the warning Jonah gave to them when they repented. Now this last message will not be listened to and the end will come quickly. We as Christians are the ones to bring the message of hope to people in the middle of turmoil and how we can trust God in all things to be for his glory and our ultimate good.

week 10 - August 9th

Habakkuk was a little different from the other Minor Prophets as it starts with questioning God and ending in a song of praise, much like some of David's Psalms. What we see is that God is willing to answer our questions if asked in faith but his answer is not always what we expect to hear, or at least in the timing we desire. But we can trust God to do the right thing in the right way at the right time.

week 11 - august 16th

This week we looked at the first of the prophets to speak after the return from exile. Haggai speaks to the people about rebuilding the temple and why they are experiencing problems. The basic message is to build the temple and stop living in fear as well as to focus on God and not just their own needs. God will provide and take care of them if they do what God commands.

week 12 - august 23

This in the longest Minor Prophet book and can be one of the hardest to understand because because of the visions that are reminiscent of the book of Revelation. We can understand such writing by looking at the historical context and the people who it is written to. We talk through the first 6 chapters and how we can use what we learned to understand the rest of the book.
